Rodrico Sold To Hong Kong

This time last year we were told that Group 1 Queensland Derby runner-up WERTHER had been sold to Hong Kong.

Since then we know that he has taken the world of racing by storm winning two of that country’s biggest and most respected events.

He’s now even considered in the same breathe as WINX.

Well, earlier this week another galloper with Queensland Derby form – from this year’s crop – was snapped up by Hong Kong interests as well.

Sydney-trained 3YO RODRICO, is headed up there after the Werther people thought it prudent to go back to the same well.

This year’s recent Queensland Derby runner-up, oh that’s the same placing Werther achieved prior to his sale (the Hong Kong people are sticklers for tradition as omens) will be out to emulate the now international star Werther by targeting the rich Hong Kong Derby over 2000m.

The sale price is being with held but given how much they spend on our stayers, it would be in excess of $1.1million.

Rodrico’s new racing career was brokered by Magic Millions Sales Director David Chester.

The horse was sought out by HK-based owner Johnson Chen through Chester at Magic Millions – following the exact path taken to secure Werther last year.

"Johnson Chen is a great friend of Magic Millions and our initial purchase together has turned out a remarkable success and we're hoping lightning can strike twice with Rodrico," Chester said.

Rodrico was trained by Chris Waller when racing in Australia.

He is a son of High Chaparral, and his career earnings from his nine starts here resulted in earnings of $281,710.
Werther’s success and this subsequent sale of Rodrico opens the door for more Aussie stars to go north.

The prizemoney in Hong Kong is superior even to ours – and Aussie prizemoney in the main rates as one of the highest in the world.

But it’s more than that for the Hong Kong owners. Face, as it’s known, is the major driving force. Face is when they (owners) are elevated above their peers through the deeds of their racehorses.

Other well-credentialed Aussie horses like unbeaten RUSSIAN REVOLUTION, Tassy Triple Crown winner JERILDERIE LETTER, Golden Slipper placegetter FLYING ARTIE, emerging star DINGHU MOUNTAIN and impressive three-times sprint winner ELEMENOPHEE would be typical targets.

There is a list of criteria the owners up there prefer ticked off including sex, age, performance, soundness etc, so it may well be we see a lot more sales from here of our better horses to there.

Stay tuned.

Saturday racing in Victoria is at the reworked Caulfield track.

The battle rages on and is getting closer between Dwayne Dunn and Craig Williams for the Vic Jock’s Title. Both have big books of rides on Saturday.

It was running heavily in Melbourne Thursday afternoon and into the evening.

Rail Position: Is out 7m entire course
Track Condition: rates a Soft 7

Race: 1- Catanach’s Jewelers 2YO Hcp  1200m

Date: 2/7
Time: 11:40pm
Location: Caulfield

TENAPPY LADIES, were nearly all delirious when this colt charged through to lead on debut until well into the straight. Fitter now, more experienced, and has Dwayne Dunn on board desperate to start the day with a win. All reads well. DESTINY’S REVENGE was beaten into 3rd on debut but is going to be right in this finish. Drawn perfectly while GIMLET is yet to miss a place this grade in four starts. Good race.

The Early Crows Top Tip:  TENAPPY LADIES

Race: 2 – Kevin Dunne Plate  2000m

Date: 2/7
Time: 12:15pm
Location: Caulfield

AU REVOIR made steady ground without threatening last start over a mile. He’s only had two runs in 16 months so is ring rusty but whispers say he’ll run well in this. LONGERON is the in form stayer at the moment and his win last start this grade underlined this. Tough to beat again while ALCOHOL, probably because of the name, is on everyone’s lips of late. Can place.

The Early Crows Top Tip:  LONGERON

Race: 3- Golden Ale Hcp 1700m

Date: 2/7
Time: 12:50pm
Location: Caulfield

Haha…Alcohol should have been in this race given the name of it. But, ROYAL RAPTURE is and he looks well placed. Has been steadily improving every run this time in and last start win was dominant. ELECTRIC FUSION has been made fitter appreciably by two runs this time in and is going to be right in this finish while YULONG BABY has in form Mick Dee on board and is fitter following a terrific first up run. Good race.

The Early Crows Top Tip:  ROYAL RAPTURE

Race: 4- Grand Hotel Frankston Hcp  1400m

Date: 2/7
Time: 1:28pm
Location: Caulfield

JERILDERIE LETTER is a fascinating horse who swept all before him last campaign in Tasmania winning the Tassy Derby, Guineas and Hobart Guineas. Can’t do that unless you are very good. Drawn badly here though but must be respected. STORMCRAFT has posted two ultra impressive wins this time up and is obviously thriving. Drawn the rails, will get a great run and looks the one to beat. REWARDING EFFORT can’t be left out either. This is harder than last start win but there was merit in that effort.

The Early Crows Top Tip:  STORMCRAFT

Race: 5- The Cove Hotel Hcp  1200m

Date: 2/7
Time: 2:05pm
Location: Caulfield

MICK’S HUSTLER looked so well placed until the barrier draw came out. Will cover ground from out in 16 so place hope here. All the best ones have drawn deep. LORD BARRINGTON rated a big show too until he drew 20…arghhh so we look at BELESRON who has the rails peg. Form is ordinary this time up but is a long way down in grade and may pay to watch market moves.

The Early Crows Top Tip:  BELESRON

Race: 6- BM 90 Hcp 1400m

Date: 2/7
Time: 2:45
Location: Caulfield

DUKE OF BRUNSWICK gets all the ticks here. Off the bit early before chasing home a smart one last start when 2nd at the Valley. Track and grade suit better here and the draw…holy dooley it’s perfect for him. SOMETHING TO SHARE is racing in great style of late and although up in grade a little here, has the weight to worry these. Good run first up too. GREAT ESTEEM is better than form in tougher grade suggests and can place at odds.

The Early Crows Top Tip:  DUKE OF BRUNSWICK

Race: 7- Sheen 3YO Fillies Plate 1100m

Date: 2/7
Time: 3:25pm
Location: Caulfield

This SEMPRE LIBERA will start betting at big odds but there’s a whisper around that she has found form again. Is better than these on her day so if that’s right…have something on her. ELEGANT QUEEN is always a threat in this grade. Won three of past six and is drawn sweetly, while ANATOLA was extra smart last time in and can resume in good style.

The Early Crows Top Tip:  SEMPRE LIBERA

Race: 8- Racing Photos Hcp 2000m

Date: 2/7
Time: 4:05pm
Location: Caulfield

Intriguing race. HURSLEY ran home gamely last start and this will suit. Earlier in the week he was trialled over the hurdles so he must be fit and now fully turned on. Respect. SACRED THEME is proving to be a very honest type with indications this trip will suit. Gets back and runs on. Is up in grade though while STRIKE FORCE is in a strong staying yard and warrants a good place show.

The Early Crows Top Tip:  HURSLEY

Race: 9- Schweppes Hcp 1200m

Date: 2/7
Time: 4:40pm
Location: Caulfield

SHADES OF BELLA won last start at this track in easier grade but did it with panache and is now super fit. Clearly, off this draw and with the above attributes, she rates highly. A LOTTA LOVE is very honest this grade and seems to always be around the money as does KANSAS SUNFLOWER who has Craig Williams riding. She’s been runner-up three in a row this grade and is perfectly drawn.

The Early Crows Top Tip:  SHADES OF BELLA

Bulldogs overhauled, son of a gun to debut

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has swung the axe following his side’s 57-point loss to Geelong before the bye, dumping Tom Campbell, Fletcher Roberts, Josh Dunkley and Mitch Honeychurch.

Veteran ruckman Will Minson, and slick duo Clay Smith and Jason Johannisen have earned recalls to the Dogs’ line-up.

Carlton youngster Jack Silvagni will debut at the tender age of 18 against Collingwood, following in the footsteps of his father, AFL Team of the Century fullback Stephen, and his grandfather, fellow Carlton legend Serge.

Meanwhile, the Magpies get veteran Tyson Goldsack back from a thumb injury layoff, and Callum Ah Chee (Suns), Jack Grimes (Demons) and Jeremy Laidler (Swans) are also among the notable players returning.
