Wednesday Racing Preview – Doomben

The main racing on Wednesday in Queensland will be at Doomben. Plenty of winners this time around and races will be conducted upon a track that has been bathed in sunshine of late.

Rail Position:  is out 3m the entire track
Track Condition: rates a Good 4

Race 1- Open Mdn 1050m

Date: 1/2
Time: 12:40pm
Location: Doomben

ALSEEYA should win, but boy he’s taking his time. Is now six year old and has placed this grade 9 times without a win. All the mapping said he would just bolt in. Gets chance to atone here as field is easier. LUCKY LIPS has just one run to date, but top jock, top trainer top gate suggest she can show up. This could be a bit short for SHE’S ON POINT but she will be getting to the line hard final stages.

The Early Crows Top TipALSEEYA

Race 2 – Paul Dogsy Dolan Mdn Plate 1615m

Date: 1/2
Time: 1:15pm
Location: Doomben

LUJAC has placed past 4 this grade and one suspects he will go very close again.  Watch market. MARK MY WORD can read exactly the same. Place hope, while MONTANA PINES charged home late but beaten by a very smart one here last start. If he gets clear in straight,  will take holding out.

The Early Crows Top TipMONTANA PINES

Race 3- Neil Lofty Stevenson 0-70 Hcp 1615m

Date: 1/2
Time: 1:50pm
Location: Doomben

NEARCTIC CHILLER led and held on bravely 2 starts back, beaten 2 lens into 3rd this grade. Similar effort last start. Big show.  SCOUTABOUT has been hitting line well past 2. Worth a chance here now fitter. FRENCH SONG did score slightly easier grade 2 starts back and does seem to be running well enough.

The Early Crows Top TipNEARCTIC CHILLER

Race 4- QTIS 3YO Mdn 1200m

Date: 1/2
Time: 2:25pm
Location: Doomben

SON OF A BRUT might be pretty handy. Showed talent last campaign and is ready to run big race here. SORNJA has been placed twice from 2 goes this company and more significantly, has had 2 cracking runs coming from well back. Big show. Unraced SKY TEAM won barrier trial effortlessly recently. Watch market.

The Early Crows Top TipSON OF A BRUT

Race 5- Graham Turner QTIS 3YO Mdn 1200m

Date: 1/2
Time: 3:05pm
Location: Doomben

PUBLISHING POWER was resuming last start and ran a corker to grab 2nd this grade. Looks hard to beat. ONE GOLDEN DAY is longing for just that – and is close. Showed up this company last start when 4th and drawn perfectly here. HUSSON BOOTS is down in grade and can be considered a good chance to be in the finish.

The Early Crows Top TipHUSSON BOOTS

Race 6- John Bunny Brasch Females Class 3 Hcp 1200m

Date: 1/2
Time: 3:40pm
Location: Doomben

STAR OF THE NIGHT is the class in the race but is coming off a bad run last start. Form prior would win this, and she has a 3kg claim here too. Watch for her late. CLANG’S VICTORY is as honest as a Queensland day is hot – and on that basis must be considered. Should get a good run throughout. SAYS ME ran boldly last start when 2nd this grade. Fitter now and can be in the finish.

The Early Crows Top TipSTAR OF THE NIGHT

Race 7- Steve Hewlett Class 3 1350m

Date: 1/2
Time: 3:40pm
Location: Doomben

Very strong Class 2 field this. RECALCITRATA is a money-spinner but a frustrating one. Has enough fitness now 3rd up to be in the frame here. WINDY SANDS  is extremely honest this grade placing past 7 starts. Bound to be in the finish. CAFÉ TERRACE is from strong stable and looked good in weaker race last start when 3rd. Top rider here. Big show.

The Early Crows Top TipWINDY SANDS

Race 8- 2y Yrs Of Radio BM 75 1350m

Date: 1/2
Time: 4:50pm
Location: Doomben

SPICE OF LIFE was at the limit of his powers when last in work. Resuming here but is ready. That helps, plus the 3kg claim and the great barrier draw. UMGENI is honest this company and honest horses are always worth backing. MAGAZINE MISS is in well at the weights and despite rise in grade, can finish off well enough to place.

The Early Crows Top TipUMGENI

Jungle Book: Week 1

Reality TV is back baby and boy are we excited! I’m talking a truckload of snakes chasing an Iguana excited, but with twelve singlet wearing celebs, chowing down like Kobayashi on the grossest gizzards that the African jungle floor can provide! The Celebrity Royal Rumble is here and there’s already more action and speculation than a Friday night at Moonee Valley.

This season’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here has launched on Channel Ten with a wonderfully weird bunch of celebrities from all fathoms of life looking to snap up their tickets for this year’s Lavazza marquee at Derby Day, er, I mean, to take the title for their chosen charity.

Tom Arnold @ $15.00

We’ve got the big recruit, the Kevin Durant if you will, of this year’s celeb team – Tom Arnold, looking a shadow of his former self and if anyone is capable of winning an eating challenge and taking the title, it’s the big guy!

Natalie Bassingthwaighte @ $7.00

The gorgeous Nat Bass brings that lead singer sass and Ramsay St nous to the camp as well as a kick ass attitude to team wins. Can she tear through her competitors the way she tore through Dr. Karl Kennedy’s heart?

Teagan Martin @ $17.00

Being a former Miss Universe Australia looks to serve Teagan Martin well, with a surprisingly down to earth view, easy-going personality. Let’s hope we see some of that pageantry back-stabbing & bitchiness to take her deep into the competition.

Ash Pollard @ $19.00

Reality TV professional, Ash Pollard knows what it takes to go deep into a reality TV comp. Being able to turn three quarters of a Warthog bum cheek into a delicious slow-cooked Ragu could see her become a camp favourite as well.

Casey Donovan @ $7.50

Australian Idol winner, seriously hilarious and beautifully foul-mouthed Casey Donovan is a brilliant addition to this year’s competitors. Put Casey down as a huge chance for the Top 5, everyone loves a comeback story!

Steve Price @ $12.00

Radio hard-ass Steve Price brings the grump and the analytic strategy of a jungle killer to the competition and is already crushing any challenge put in front of him. Add a no filter approach to his political views and we’ve got a major player worth watching.

Nazeem Hussain @ $17.00

One of Australia’s funniest men, often mistaken for Waleed Aly in newspapers and magazines, will bring the humour to keep the camp amused and looks determined to make his mark.

Dane Swan @ $2.50

Never thought I’d see Swanny more than fifty metres from Chapel Street let alone in this show, but I’m sure Australia will love him and his sleeper cell humour and is understandably short odds. Will take some running down in the home straight.

Jay Laga’aia @ $4.00

Jay Laga’aia jumps through the round window, around the rocket clock and out of a helicopter and straight into Top Five calculations with an interesting mix of jokes, Ukulele skill and being mates with Hamble. He’s a big chance.

Lisa Curry @ $15.00

Unfortunately, I don’t see the same chance for Olympic superstar Lisa Curry. We like drama, tears and breakdowns, Lisa’s just too together, too nice, and is deserved long odds for the win, no matter how good her crocheting is.

Kris Smith @ $5.00

What’s I’m a Celeb without some resident eye-candy?  Unfortunately, it’s not Hot Dogs from Big Brother 2005, but male model/former rugby star/chiseled god Kris Smith! Here to increase camp heart rates, decrease the number of shirts worn and bring the combined total visible ab muscles between him and the author of this article to eight. Kris for all his buffness seems to me to fill that mid-range placing’s in the way Lankan Rupee now fills the mid-field placing’s at Flemington (sob!).

Tziporah Malkah @ $21.00

A gift straight from the reality TV Gods! It’s the Artist formerly known as Kate Fischer and boy does it look like she’ll make this the best season yet. Now known as Tziporah Malkah, full of one-liners, three quarters of crazy and the knowledge that if she can survive an engagement to James Packer, she can survive anything that the jungle can throw at her.

So, we’re off to a great start with I’m a Celeb, let’s bring on the bladder weakening challenges, because I’m finding it hard to pinpoint a clear favourite this year so just like the jungle, I’m thinking its Exotics time. Put me down for an early box Trifecta of Swanny, Casey Donovan and Tizporah for value! Go you good things!

Super Bowl Preview

New England Patriots v Atlanta Falcons

10.30am (AEDT), Monday, February 6 @ NRG Stadium, Houston

Teams: Both teams have a couple of minor injury problems, with the Patriots listing Stephen Gostkowski as probable and Nate Ebner as questionable for the Super Bowl. The Falcons’ Alex Mack is probable, but DE Adrian Clayborn was ruled out after the Conference Championships.

History: The teams have met 13 times previously, with the Patriots leading 7 wins to the Falcons’ 6 – including a 30-23 away win in their last meeting back in 2013. This is their first playoffs encounter.

The Patriots have appeared in a record 8 Super Bowls, winning 4 and losing 4; most recently they edged the Seahawks in the decider two years ago. The Falcons have appeared in just one Super Bowl, back in the 1998 season when they went down 34-19 to the Broncos.

Form: The Patriots produced a league-best 14-2 record, winning their last 7 regular-season games before disposing of the Texans (34-16) and Steelers (36-17) in the playoffs. The Falcons topped the NFC South with an 11-5 record, winning their last 4 regular-season games before beating the Seahawks (36-20) and Packers (44-21) in the playoffs.

Stats: The Patriots have won 3 of their last 4 against the Falcons. Six of their last 7 games have been decided by 7+ margins. The Patriots’ last 5 wins this season were by 13 points or more, while they have conceded more than 17 points just once in their last 9 games. The Falcons leaked 26+ points 10 times during the regular season, and 20+ in both playoffs games so far, but they have scored 33+ in 9 of their last 11 games. The Patriots are 8-0 away from their home base this season. The Falcons are 6-2 away from the Georgia Dome this season.

Final Thoughts: The biggest annual sporting event in the world is upon us again, and it sees Tom Brady and the indomitable Patriots gunning for another Lombardi Trophy, with the history-chasing Falcons standing in their way. Brady and Atlanta’s Matt Ryan have been the best two quarterbacks in the NFL this season, and while Brady is considered by many as the G.O.A.T. (and wouldn’t he love to accept the trophy from NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell after the ‘Deflategate’ saga?), Ryan has had a career-best year.

There’s several other mouth-watering match-ups – Blount v Freeman, Edelman v Jones – and while both offenses are absolutely firing, it’s the Pats’ ruthless defense that shapes as the decisive factor ahead of Super Bowl LI. They also have plentiful big-match experience, while this is a new stage for Ryan and the Falcons. Wily New England coach Bill Belichick will have his side finely tuned, and the favourites should carry off their fifth Super Bowl crown with a dominant second-half performance against the plucky Falcons.

Wednesday NBA Tips

Portland Trail Blazers v Charlotte Hornets

2.00pm (AEDT), Wednesday, February 1 @ Portland

Likely Line-ups:

  • Trail Blazers – Evan Turner, Noah Vonleh, Mason Plumlee, CJ McCollum, Damian Lillard
  • Hornets – Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Marvin Williams, Roy Hibbert, Nicolas Batum, Kemba Walker

History: Portland have won 37 regular-season games to Charlotte’s 16. The teams both chalked up a home win in their two clashes last season, while the Hornets prevailed 107-85 at home two weeks ago.

Form: The Trail Blazers are ninth in the Western Conference with a 21-28 record; their 3-game winning streak over the Celtics, Lakers and Grizzlies ended with a 2-point loss to the Warriors in their most recent outing. The Hornets are eighth in the East with a 23-25 record, but have lost 9 of their last 12 – including 4 straight to the Wizards, Warriors, Knicks and Kings.

Stats: The Trail Blazers have won 7 of their last 10 against the Hornets, but the Hornets have won 3 of the last 4 as the home team. Six of these teams’ last eight meetings were decided by 12+ points. The Blazers are 13-10 at home this season and have won 5 of their last 8 at the Moda Center. The Hornets are 8-15 on the road and are currently on a 7-game away losing streak.

Final Thoughts: Two teams who were quick out of the blocks this season before slumping square off, but it’s the Hornets that come into this clash with a worrying form-line. Kemba Walker continues to produce for Charlotte, however, and his and Nicolas Batum’s back-court battle with CJ McCollum and Damian Lillard will be vital. The Blazers are stronger offensively than the defensively-minded Hornets, but they struggled when the teams met recently, with their 8-for-31 shooting from three-point range a crucial factor. Portland need to provide more support for sharpshooters McCollum and Lillard. The Hornets’ awful run on the road is impossible to overlook, though, and that tilts the scales in favour of the Hornets in this one.
