Houston Rockets v San Antonio Spurs

Game 4 – 11.00am (AEST), Monday, May 8 @ Houston

Likely Line-ups:

Rockets – Trevor Ariza, Ryan Anderson, Clint Capela, Patrick Beverley, James Harden

Spurs – Kawhi Leonard, LaMarcus Aldridge, Pau Gasol, Danny Green, Dejounte Murray

History: The Spurs have won 106 regular-season games to the Rockets’ 83, but the Rockets hold an 11-8 advantage in playoffs games. The Spurs won 3 regular-season games to the Rockets’ 1 this season. Their last playoffs series was in the 1995 Conference Finals, which Houston won 4-2. The Spurs lead this series 2-1 heading into Game 4.

Form: The Spurs went 61-21 during the regular season, finishing second in the Western Conference. They downed the Grizzlies 4-2 in a tougher-than-expected first-round series, dropping consecutive games in Memphis before closing it out with wins in Games 5 and 6. The third-placed Rockets went 55-27 in the regular season, and brushed the Thunder aside 4-1 in the first round. The Rockets routed the Spurs 126-99 in the San Antonio series opener, but the Spurs have bounced back with a 121-96 win at home and a 103-92 victory in Houston.

Stats: The Spurs have won 11 of their last 14 against the Rockets, including the last 4 in Houston. Seven of the Spurs’ 9 games in these playoffs have been decided by 7+. Five of the teams’ last 8 encounters have produced 206 points or less. The Rockets went 30-11 at home in the regular season and are 3-1 so far in the playoffs; they have won 10 of their last 13 at Toyota Center. The Spurs went 30-11 on the road in the regular season and are 2-2 so far in the playoffs; their two most recent wins away from San Antonio broke a 4-game road losing streak.

Final Thoughts: The Spurs have bounced back emphatically from their Game 1 thrashing to take a stranglehold on this series, and now it’s the Rockets who are under the pump. Houston linchpin James Harden was shut down superbly in Game 2, and while he managed 43 points in Game 3, the Spurs’ defence was again outstanding. San Antonio’s marquee man Kawhi Leonard is proving difficult to combat, racking up big points, rebounds and assists numbers. Veteran guard Tony Parker’s injury was a blow for the Spurs, but they barely skipped a beat with Dejounte Murray and Patty Mills picking up the slack. This is must-win for the Rockets – they can ill-afford to go back to San Antonio down 3-1 – but the Spurs are in the groove and shape as the best option with the start.
