How do you pick between these two Darren Weir runners? LORESHO is 5th up, making him primed for battle at this trip and his last start 4th to the brilliant Aloft when closing hard late, was most impressive. On the other hand, his stablemate MASTER ZEPHYR is a dour, dyed-in-the-wool stayer, who is in form. He came with a rush to knock over another star in Kilimanjaro last start at Flemington. Query is the track here – no long run in and both will get back. But they are the class. CHARLEVOIX, who disappointed in this grade last start when 5th, surprisingly left his usual pattern of racing and was well back that day. If he goes back to his main style, he should be up near the lead all way and box on into a placing.
HEAR THE CHANT is a quality mare and deserves the big weight here. Is resuming from an autumn campaign which saw her reach Black Type level. Sprint trip here is no worry as she has great first up form and can sprint very well too having won at 1000m. Looks one of the better ones in this. DIVINE CHILLS may be reaching a little too far in terms of class here but what she brings to the table is fitness and determination. The latter is the key. Just loves sitting handy to lead, 2 lengths back of the pace and chiming in. Has won 4 races, 3 at this journey. CHIAVARI hasn’t won for some time, but gee she’s been close. Last campaign she raced 7 times, earning a solid cheque on each occasion and always in this company. Drawn well here, has good fresh record and will be thereabouts again.
Tip:SWORD OF LIGHT
Terrific, Group level field. TULIP has Group 1 placings to her credit and trialed well recently. She’s resuming here but when last in work was placed in a strong Golden Slipper. Respect. GARRARD is very honest, although, annoying for connections and many punters, she doesn’t win many. Looked smart last campaign though when placing a lot. LIMESTONE is resuming here but last campaign was one of the star fillies of her age bracket. Will be primed for a first up run, and has great first up record to fall back on too. Big show.
PATCH ADAMS has now had two pipe-openers this time up and as such should be ready to rumble. Drop back in grade here should be a help too. Perfectly drawn to receive comfy run behind speed. JAMINZAH is rising in grade but you can’t knock two wins on the bounce. Will find it a tad awkward getting in from out wide but is fit and versatile. SIN TO WIN is a rather immoral name and outlook but it is working with three low key wins from past six starts and three placings as well. Can place again.
ALMANDIN has copped the brunt of being a Melbourne Cup winner having to lump 61kg first up. He doesn’t have great fresh form but he has won at this trip. The big question is how much has he improved from last spring? He looks to settle worse than midfield here and may dart home into a place. KILLARNEY KID is going very ordinarily this time up but last start spring, man he had Almandin’s measure every time they met. Has Rawiller back on here and surely this week he has to find form. HANS HOLBEIN is resuming here but a big, big watch on this bloke. He’s my early Melbourne Cup tip this year so you’d be wanting him to run on strongly here. Looks stakes grade toward the end of his last campaign. Watch market.
AZAZEL has proven several times now that he belongs in this grade against the better class horses. And his win first up last start just simply underscored all that. He’ll get the drop on the pace to the turn and will swoop. Nice chance. CAO CAO keeps promising to be top drawer yet always falls a length or so short. Is 2nd up here and will probably get back. But worth playing in your numbers. OVERSHARE is drawn perfectly. Down from Sydney for this and is capable because of the draw of being handy all way.
EL DIVINO is ready to step from his big sister, Winx’s shadow. He has good form first up and is fresh here. Sure to be handy all way. HEATHERLY is a rocket out of the gates and will dart through from this inside draw and no doubt lead, although Jungle Edge will try hard to go with her. If she finds the paint in the lead she can run them ragged. MISSROCK, therefore, represents the great value as she can stalk anyone who takes off. And she will love the fact a couple will try and do so. Big watch on her here.
DUKE OF BRUNSWICK finds himself in very well at the weights here with the 3kg claim and drawn to get the gun run too. Two starts this time up in this grade have been excellent. Hard to beat in this open affair. NOZOMI won like an improved horse first up. Gets weight relief in this slightly tougher field but is drawn better than most. I’M FEELING LUCKY is yet another star West Aussie now over in Vic plying her trade. Is very smart on her day and has won at stakes level. Respect market moves. So many tough variables to contend with here.
MIGHTY LIKE is ready to return to best form. Gets weight relief here following 2 good runs this grade since resuming. Perfectly fit now and drawn well. RED ALTO is rising through the grades but seems like one of those types who can keep jumping the raised bar. Won like a smart when resuming last start. HAY BALE is up in class but down on the limit gives him an edge. Fit and is consistent.
